University Libraries

Dean's Welcome

Welcome to the Libraries of Central Washington University!  It is my great pleasure to work with the enthusiastic and expert faculty and staff at Brooks Library and at the CWU Center locations in Lynnwood and Des Moines.

The libraries offer a wide range of services for our students, faculty, staff, and community.  We constantly assess and shape spaces for our users.  This past year, the Student Commons on the second floor of Brooks Library opened, providing an atmosphere for collaboration as well as study “alone but together.”  The Commons is the venue for many of our public programs, such as the Big Read and other literary events in partnerships from around the university.

We care for our collections in print and electronic form in support of teaching, learning, and research.  Library collections are an interactive component of learning.  The Archives preserves and makes accessible primary resources documenting the history of CWU and the region.  See the Active Print research guide for more information.

We recognize that to create the best possible conditions for learning, we need to consider the whole person.  One of our proud traditions at Brooks is providing much-needed stress relief and sustenance for Finals Week with a variety of programming, including the beloved Waffle Night and Paws and Relax.

Our libraries are on the front lines of the battle to make education more affordable and accessible.  Through a Washington Student Achievement Council Open Educational Resources Grant, CWU librarians are facilitating the creation of free online course materials.  This means that the students taking these classes will have high-quality, free texts.

Please think of our collections and programs in your giving plans.

In the 2019-2020 academic year, I’m looking forward to the work we’ll do in creating a new strategic plan for our library to build on our strengths.  I would love to hear your feedback on how we are doing, and new ideas for us to try.

All the best,

Rebecca L. Lubas
