University Libraries

Archives play an important role in society. As repositories of a culture's unique documents, records and other materials, archives serve as tools for social accountability, the preservation and dissemination of historical memory, and the understanding of cultural, social and political forces in an increasingly digital and networked world.

LIS 411, Introduction to Archives, provides an introduction to the profession of archival studies. In addition to the history, development, and nature of work in the profession, the basics of collections management and development, intellectual control, preservation, conservation, and technological applications will be presented.
