Historical or Biographical Sketch: The photograph collection was purchased from Edward W. Nolan by Central Washington State College during the mid 1970s. Ed Nolan is a rare photograph collector and author of numerous illustrated books and guides related to Pacific Northwest history. He currently serves as the head of Special Collections at the Washington State Historical Society.

Scope and Content Note: The collection contains photographic prints of rural and urban landscapes, portraits and railroad scenes from the 1870s to the 1920s. The bulk of the collection consists of images of communities in the State of Washington and western United States at the later part of the 19th Century and early part of the 20th Century. Included in the collection are numerous unidentified portraits and a few photographs of communities outside of the United States.
