Historical or Biographical Sketch: The first student newspaper was published in 1916 as the Student Opinion. In 1927, the name of the paper was changed to the Campus Crier and since 1984 it has been titled The Observer. See page 183 of The First 75 years: A History of Central Washington State College by Samuel R. Mohler (1967). The newspaper is published weekly on Thursdays during the academic year.

Scope and Content Note: This collection contains photographs given to the Archives by the Observer office. It is not known whether the collection is exhaustive of all photographs printed. The photographs range in subject matter from sporting events to candid shots of campus scenes. Contact sheets sometimes contain photographer names, event names and dates. Many photographs have no identifying information at all. The photographs came into the Archives in subject files which were separated into date ranges within the subject matter depicted (i.e., —Football— was separated into several files by decade).
