Library Users (Patrons)

I. University Library Users

Current students and current employees have user privileges to licensed and contracted services, such as periodical databases, InterLibrary loan resources and Summit (the union catalog for the Orbis-Cascade Alliance consortium) that are not made available to the general public. All current employees and current students have records in PeopleSoft Safari, or, in the case of faculty and staff, the department head, secretary or administrative assistant of their employing department can send a memo or email to the head of circulation with the employee's name, employee ID number, and terms of employment while we wait for the PeopleSoft record.

Faculty: have an on-going appointment of 12 or 9 months established by contract with CWU. Either as tenure track or by annual contract.

Adjunct Faculty: are hired by contract with CWU on a short term (frequently a quarter at a time) basis and are eligible for faculty level services only during the time frame outlined by their contracts.

Emeritus Faculty: Are faculty who have received the emeritus status from the Board of Trustees and extended privileges consistent with current faculty.

Graduate Students: Are registered with the CWU graduate office in a recognized graduate program and may be enrolled or in "grad on leave" status.

Students: include anyone registered for one or more CWU credit(s) regardless of location.

Administrators: have on-going contracts with CWU for specific positions.

Staff: are employees hired by CWU as part or full time permanent employees with the designation "classified staff".

Distinguished Civil Service: are retired classified staff who have received the "distinguished civil service" status from the CWU Board of Trustees and are extended privileges consistent with current classified staff.

Temporary: are temporary CWU employees who are only given library privileges when the department requests it as necessary for their job. They do not have remote access to the databases, InterLibrary Loan, Summit, etc. and are only eligible to check out materials owned by the Brooks Library if the hiring department sends memo or email indicating the need for library access.

Summit Borrowers: May include authorized visiting patrons from other members of the Summit consortium (Orbis Cascade Alliance) and current employees or current students of CWU.

Associates: This patron type is not currently in use.

Alumni: This patron type is not currently in use.

II. Non-University Library Users

The following library users only have access to the general book collections and Government Documents. Other services may be available when the library user is in the CWU Brooks Library.

Courtesy: users are individuals awarded Courtesy User status by the CWU President, CWU Provost, CWU Dean of Library Services or the CWU Library Head of Circulation Services. This category is intended for a very limited number of individuals as a professional courtesy.

Reciprocal Borrower: This patron type is not currently in use, it has been superseded by the categories mapped as Summit borrowers.

Summit Visiting Patron Borrowers: May include visiting patrons from other members of the Summit consortium (Orbis Cascade Alliance).

Community Borrower: is one who purchases a library card at the CWU cashier's office. The card may be renewed every six months ($25.00) or annually ($50.00) by paying the fee to the cashier's office when it expires and completing an application with each renewal.

Family: includes members of the immediate family of a CWU employee or distinguished retiree. The applicant must be over 14 years of age and living in the employees household. The employee/retiree must sign the application as a sponsor to his/her family member.

Visitor: Anyone may come into the Brooks Library building as a visitor and use certain resources here. However, there are no library loan privileges.
