Goals and objectives
COM 226, Introduction to Writing and Reporting for Convergent Media, will provide you a hands-on tour of the tumultuous world of today's journalism. Old media are converging, as broadcast news transforms into video-plus-text websites and newspapers transform into text-plus-video websites. Reporters are becoming mobile-phone digital photographers, VJs (video journalists), audio interviewers, bloggers, social-media posters and infographic creators. Today's well-trained "backpack" journalists are filling niches in online hard news, politics, entertainment, sports, fashion and other areas.
However, no matter what the news-delivery mechanism, the fundamentals are the same: accurate and fair information presented clearly to the right audience. The primary objectives of this course are to give you a basic journalistic skill set: to recognize news, to gather it, to write it for all common news media and to distribute it on the appropriate platforms.
