670 (Sources found) field: Things to remember

Attributes of the 670 field:

• a repeatable variable field


• contains no indicators


• contains two non-repeatable subfields ($a and $b)



Generally:

• The first 670 corresponds to the item being cataloged (that which caused you the need to establish the heading)


• Information in extant 670s is rarely changed (e.g., only when it is egregiously in error)


• Information can be added to the same 670 to show variant forms, etc. found (e.g., for items originally cataloged for the CIP program)


• Additional 670s are generally added in succession, not inserted before extant 670s.


• Date of searching is added to all non-print citations (e.g., databases, phone calls-- those files that are dynamic). Include month, day and year.


• Dates in 670s include the month spelled out or abbreviated.


• Contain ISBD-like punctuation but it is descriptive not prescriptive. Generally:
• Title followed by coma followed by date of publication.


• Date of publication followed by full colon followed by location data given in abbreviated form.


• Location data followed by parentheses containing information found.


• Within parenthesis data found separated by semicolons to show it is not contiguous.


• Information found in different location, within same item, added within its own set of parentheses preceded by the location where information was found.


• When location information is not given (as when citing a database of alphabetical reference source) omit colon.


• When citing OCLC, RLIN, or other bibliographic data base show usage to reinforce choice of heading.
