Determine whether the conference is named (21.1B1 and RI).Back to Index page
Expressions of the type "Chicago Conference" and "Colloque de Tours" are not
considered named conferences because they contain no subject matter words (per
e-mail message from CPSO)
Omit from the name of the conference indications of number, frequency, e.g.,
annual, or year(s) (rule 24.7A). Retain an abbreviated form of year if the
conference name combines an acronym or initialism with an abbreviated year
unless the conference is ongoing and the name remains the same for each
conference except for the abbreviated year and the proceedings are cataloged
as a serial. In that case, add a qualifier, e.g., "Conference" to the heading
(RI 24.7A). Determine whether the conference is ongoing.
If it is, do not add number/date/place qualifier to the name unless the heading conflicts (RI 24.7B).
If it is not, add number/date/place according to rule and RI 24.7B. Special rules and RIs cover headings for multiple meetings of a conference in the same year, multiple locations, choice of location. (Cf. ??? ) Determine whether the conference will be entered directly or subordinately
(rule and RI 24.13, Type 6). To be entered subordinately, the conference name can include no more than the name of the corporate body, a generic term for the meeting, and one or more of the following elements: the venue of the meeting, number, date, or other sequencing element. 110:2 : |a British Geomorphological Research Group. |b General Meeting 411:2 : |a General Meeting of the British Geomorphological Research Group (generic term may be multiple words) but 111:2 : |a World Trade Organisation Ministerial Meeting 410:2 : |a World Trade Organization. |b Ministerial Meeting Conference is entered directly because the difference in spelling of the word "Organisation" disqualifies it as a Type 6. Subordinate units of conferences are entered in subfield e following qualifiers. 111:2 : |a Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar. |e General Assembly 111:2 : |a Centennial Exhibition |d (1876 : |c Philadelphia, Pa.). |e Dept. of Education and Science. |e Massachusetts Exhibit References Make see references from variant forms of the conference that appear in the item cataloged. Make see also references from related conferences. If the first word of the heading is the name or abbreviation of the sponsor, make an inverted reference from the following word. Make an inverted reference from the "conference" term in the heading (e.g., Meeting, symposium, workshop, etc.) unless the term is the last word in the heading. Make inverted references from intermediate terms if such references are judged to be useful. Omit number/date/place qualifiers from inverted references of one-time conferences. If the conference is entered subordinately under 24.13, Type 6, make a reference from the direct name of the conference. 111:2 : |a International Winter School on Theoretical Physics 411:2 : |a Winter School on Theoretical Physics, International (ref from "intermediate" term) 411:2 : |a School on Theoretical Physics, International Winter 111:2 : |a Massachusetts Victim Rights Conference 411:2 : |a Massachusetts Annual Victim Rights Conference 411:2 : |a Massachusetts Annual Victim Rights Week Conference (no ref from "Conference") 111:2 : |a International Conference on AIDS in African Prisons |d (1998 : |c Dakar, Senegal) 411:2 : |a Conference on AIDS in African Prisons, International (no qualifier for inverted ref) 110:2 : |a Australian Academy of the Humanities. |b Symposium (subordinate, Type 6) 411:2 : |a Symposium of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (ref from direct form; based on usage)
